Find the Perfect Disc for Your Dog!
Answer two simple questions to get personalized recommendations…
Find Your Dog’s Breed
Type your dog’s breed to get a size recommendation:
How to Measure Your Dog’s Shoulder Height
- Have your dog stand on a flat, level surface (not carpet)
- Find the withers – the highest point of the shoulder blades
- Use a measuring tape vertically from ground to withers
- Measure in inches for best accuracy
Tip: The withers are behind the neck, where the shoulder blades meet. Don’t measure to the head!
- Over 17″ = Medium-Large Dog (K-10 size)
- Under 17″ = Small-Medium Dog (Pup size)
- Toy breeds = Very Small Dog (Macro size)
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about choosing the perfect disc
To measure your dog’s shoulder height (also called “height at withers”):
- Have your dog stand on a flat, level surface
- Use a measuring tape or ruler placed vertically against a wall
- Measure from the ground to the top of the shoulder blades (withers), not the head
- The withers are the highest point of the shoulder blades when the dog is standing naturally
Quick Reference: Over 17″ = Medium-Large (K-10), Under 17″ = Small-Medium (Pup), Toy breeds = Very Small (Macro)
Puncture-resistant discs (like the Jawz line) are made from a denser, tougher, more durable material that stands up better to dogs with strong bites.
Important: While puncture-resistant discs are much tougher, they are not indestructible and should not be used as chew toys. Always supervise play and inspect discs regularly for damage.
If your dog tends to puncture or destroy regular discs quickly, the Jawz or HyperFlex discs are excellent choices.
For dogs new to disc play, that don’t have “hard” bites we recommend:
- Competition Standard – Great all-around disc, affordable, and approved for competitions
- SofFlite – Ultra-soft for dogs with sensitive mouths or puppies just learning
- FrostBite – Good balance of softness and durability, works in all weather
Start with these light easier-to-catch options and graduate to more specialized discs as your dog’s skills improve!
Yes! All Hyperflite discs are competition-approved for use in Skyhoundz events and other disc dog competitions.
Hyperflite discs are the official discs of the Hyperflite Skyhoundz World Canine Disc Championship Series.
MaxQ discs are specifically designed for distance competitions like Xtreme Distance events.
Always check specific competition rules, as some events may have restrictions on disc types, weights, or classes.
No – not all discs float. If you play near water, look for discs with the “Floats in Water” feature.
Discs that FLOAT: Competition Standard, FrostBite, SofFlite, Midnight Sun Glow, MaxQ Competition Standard
Discs that DON’T float: Jawz, Jawz Glow, HyperFlex, MaxQ Jawz
The tougher puncture-resistant discs (Jawz family) are denser and don’t float, so choose accordingly based on where you play!
The sizes refer to the disc diameter and are matched to your dog’s size:
- K-10 (Large): Standard 8.75″ diameter – for medium to large dogs over 17″ tall
- Pup (Medium): 7″ diameter – for small to medium dogs under 17″ tall
- Macro (Small): 5″ diameter – for toy breeds and very small dogs
Using the right size ensures your dog can comfortably catch and carry the disc.
Glow-in-the-dark products like Hyperflite discs use phosphors embedded in the plastic to emit light when exposed to radiant energy.
The disc starts milky/cloudy in color and turns green after being charged with a light source. Phosphors slowly release their stored energy over time, causing the disc to glow. The duration of the glow depends on the charging time, as phosphors have a limit to the amount of energy they can store.
The glow may weaken over time due to degradation of the phosphor material from exposure to intense light sources or UV radiation.
For the brightest glow and fastest charge, we recommend using a UV (also known as blacklight) flashlight. Different light sources require varying charge times to achieve the same brightness level:
- 3-4 mins of ultraviolet light
- 7-8 mins of direct sunlight
- 21-23 mins of fluorescent light
- 24-26 mins of incandescent light
For heavy chewers and tough biters, choose a disc from the Jawz family:
- Jawz – The toughest puncture-resistant disc available
- Jawz Glow – Same durability with glow-in-the-dark feature
- HyperFlex – Ultra-flexible and about 80% as tough as Jawz, but softer
- MaxQ Jawz – Durable disc designed for distance throwing
Important reminder: Even puncture-resistant discs should not be used as chew toys. Supervise play and remove the disc when play time is over.
