Hyperflite Skyhoundz XDC (Xtreme Distance Challenge) Event Rules

Hyperflite Skyhoundz’s XDC (Xtreme Distance Challenge) gives canines exactly what they want — insanely long throws. Hyperflite Skyhoundz XDC’s are stand-alone events meant to showcase the pure speed and catching ability of canines and the throwing skills of the human team member. Teams compete in two divisions (Men’s and Women’s) in three distinct classes (Light Plastic, Classic Plastic, and Unlimited Plastic). All teams compete in two 90-second rounds (as many throws as a team can make within the 90-second throwing period). The top three teams in both divisions of all three classes (18 total teams) advance to a final face-off round. These top teams, by virtue of their previous long distance throws, compete in a final face-off round to try and improve upon their previous distances. Throws from both preliminary rounds, as well as the face-off round, are reviewed to determine the longest throws of the day. Awards are given to the three teams posting the longest throw in each division and class (i.e., Men’s Light Plastic, Men’s Classic Plastic, Men’s Unlimited Plastic, Women’s Light Plastic, Women’s Classic Plastic, and Women’s Unlimited Plastic). Entry fees apply. All proceeds from Hyperflite Skyhoundz XDCs benefit the contest host organizations.

The recommended minimum field set-up for XDCs is a flat, grassy rectangular area, at least 50 yards x 110 yards, that is free of obstructions. The location of the throwing line will be dictated by the field geography and wind direction. Once the throwing line is determined it will remain the same for all competitors throughout the round. The contest host may change the throwing direction only after all competitors have completed a round.

On-deck teams, when called must immediately proceed from the staging area, to the throwing area. Once the team arrives in the throwing area, a prepare to throw 15-second warning will be given. Thereafter, time will begin and teams will be advised to throw when ready. Competing teams will then have 90 seconds in which to complete as many attempts as desired. Unlike other canine long distance events, canines must not cross the throwing line until the disc leaves the thrower’s hand or a throwing fault will be called. The thrower may not step on, or over, the line at the time of the throw or a foot fault will be called. A canine may be restrained, anywhere behind the throwing line, with the aid of a helper, if desired.

Catches will be measured from the throwing line to the point where the rear-most paw of the canine contacts the ground at the time of the catch, or, if the catch is made in the air, the point where the rear-most paw of the canine contacts the ground after the mid-air catch.

Special Rule for Tipped Throws — A throw tipped by a canine, and later caught, is still a measurable throw. However, the Point of Contact Rule applies to prevent a canine from gaining an unfair advantage owing to the extra distance attributable to the tip. The Point of Contact Rule states that a tipped throw that is subsequently caught by a canine, will be measured to the point where the rear-most paw of the canine contacts the ground at the time of the tip. However, if a canine tips a disc while in the act of jumping and later successfully catches the disc, the disc will be considered caught at the point where the the rear-most paw of the canine contacts the ground after the mid-air tip, provided that the tipped throw is ultimately caught by the canine.

If a disc leaves the thrower’s hand before the 90-second throwing period elapses, it will be scored. Competitors may change discs between throws as long as the discs are permitted in the Class in which the competitor is competing. Competitors should present all discs to be used during a round to the throwing line judge for inspection and/or weighing.

All teams compete in 90-second rounds.
